Interstate 65: Birmingham – Alabama

Take a quick ride through the industrial heart of central Alabama as we drive 3.4 miles north along Interstate 65 through Birmingham. This short but significant stretch begins just outside downtown at the massive interchange with I-20/I-59 and continues to the junction with Interstate 22 on the north side of the city. It may be a brief segment, but it offers a cross-section of Birmingham’s grit, growth, and infrastructure.

We begin our journey where I-65 and I-20/59 meet at one of Alabama’s most heavily trafficked interchanges. The sprawling junction lies on the north side of downtown Birmingham, surrounded by ramps, flyovers, and elevated viaducts. Heading northbound, we quickly leave the downtown core behind as I-65 rises above the ground on a long elevated section that spans local streets, rail yards, and industrial zones.

The surroundings here are distinctly urban but less about skyscrapers and more about legacy infrastructure. To the west, the historic Collegeville neighborhood comes into view, home to the Bethel Baptist Church—an early headquarters of the civil rights movement. To the east, the Norwood and Druid Hills neighborhoods are visible in patches through breaks in the trees and rail lines. These communities reflect a mix of old Birmingham industry and newer residential revival efforts.

As we continue north, the road remains elevated, offering fleeting views of warehouses, switching yards, and the corridors of the Norfolk Southern rail lines. Birmingham’s industrial roots are on full display here—steel facilities, brick factories, and distribution centers dominate the landscape. This section of the interstate often experiences heavy truck traffic due to its role as a key freight corridor between downtown Birmingham and points north and west.

We conclude this short segment at the interchange with Interstate 22. This newer connection links Birmingham with Memphis and serves as a major western route for both passenger and commercial travel. I-22’s designation as Corridor X highlights its importance as part of the Appalachian Development Highway System. From here, I-65 continues north toward Fultondale, Cullman, and ultimately Nashville.

While it’s not the most scenic stretch of Interstate 65, this Birmingham segment is a reminder of the city’s industrial strength and logistical significance. For travelers heading through central Alabama, it’s a crucial connector between old southern rail towns and modern interstate commerce.
