U.S. Route 231: Pell City to Vincent – Alabama

Leaving Pell City behind, we head south on U.S. Route 231 for a scenic 17-mile drive toward the small town of Vincent, Alabama. This stretch of US-231 begins at the junction with U.S. Highway 78 on the south side of Pell City, not far from the shores of Logan Martin Lake. Almost immediately, the road takes on a more relaxed, rural tone as we move away from the hustle of the city and into the rolling foothills of central Alabama.

As we travel southward, US-231 loosely parallels the western edge of the Coosa River. Though the river isn’t always visible from the road, its proximity brings lush greenery and fertile lowlands to the landscape. The drive offers a blend of wooded sections, pastureland, and the occasional creek crossing, making it an ideal route for those who enjoy more laid-back, scenic drives. We pass through the unincorporated community of New London about halfway through the journey—an area that still feels like true Alabama countryside, with scattered homes, farms, and churches that have served local families for generations.

Continuing on, the road gently winds through the rural heart of St. Clair and Shelby Counties. There’s little commercial development along this segment, which keeps the atmosphere quiet and natural. Keep an eye out for deer in the mornings and evenings, as the wooded areas can be active with wildlife. As we approach Vincent, the surroundings shift slightly again. The town of Vincent is small but historic, sitting at the junction of US-231 and Alabama Highway 25. This is where our drive comes to an end—but it’s also a great point to transition onto AL-25 for those heading toward Leeds or the Appalachian ridges to the north.

Vincent itself makes a worthwhile stop. While it’s not a major destination, you’ll find a few local businesses, gas stations, and places to grab a bite. The town is near the Coosa River, and with a short detour, you can explore some riverside parks or local fishing spots. If you’re into off-the-beaten-path travel, this stretch of US-231 delivers a quiet charm and natural beauty that stands in contrast to the interstate-driven routes nearby.
