Texas State Highway 183: DFW Airport to Dallas

There’s no better introduction to Dallas than hitting the open road straight from DFW Airport, merging onto the ever-busy TX-183, and making your way east into the heart of the city. Whether you’re arriving for business, sightseeing, or just passing through, this ten-mile stretch offers a surprisingly dynamic cross-section of the Metroplex—fast-moving freeways, glimpses of bustling suburbs, and that unmistakable Dallas skyline pulling you in from the west.

As we roll out from DFW Airport, the drive begins on the TX-97 Spur before quickly joining up with Texas State Highway 183, also known locally as the Airport Freeway. Almost immediately, we encounter the interchange with the President George Bush Turnpike (TX-161), a major connector for those heading north or south around the Metroplex. But our sights are set firmly eastbound, following the gentle curve of 183 as it guides us through the city of Irving.

Traveling through Irving is a bit of a who’s-who of North Texas suburban life. On your right, you’ll spot hotels, office parks, and the occasional cluster of restaurants—this is a corridor packed with travelers and locals alike. Watch for the prominent Las Colinas district on the north side, famous for its master-planned developments and the iconic Mustangs at Las Colinas sculpture (just a quick detour north if you have time to explore). Along the way, there are also plenty of places to grab a bite or top off your tank, making this stretch both convenient and lively.

As TX-183 approaches the junction with Texas Highway 12 (Walton Walker Boulevard), the urban energy ramps up. The skyline of Dallas starts to peek through the horizon, especially as we make the subtle southeast turn toward downtown. This section often sees some traffic, particularly during rush hour, but the reward is a front-row view of one of Texas’s largest cities coming into focus. Just before the drive ends, you’ll pass under broad overpasses and merge onto Interstate 35E—your gateway to Downtown Dallas, Uptown, the Design District, or just about anywhere you want to go in Big D.

For those interested in exploring along the route, consider a quick detour into Las Colinas for its scenic canals and public art, or head south to one of Irving’s parks for a breath of fresh air. Closer to Dallas, the neighborhoods west of I-35E are rapidly transforming, offering coffee shops, breweries, and vibrant nightlife. No matter your destination, TX-183 serves as both a thoroughfare and an introduction to the ever-evolving story of Dallas.
