Scenic Arkansas Highway 7: Caddo Valley to Hot Springs

Let’s take a ride along one of Arkansas’s most celebrated scenic byways—Highway 7—from Caddo Valley north into the heart of Hot Springs. Stretching about 27 miles, this portion of Highway 7 invites us to roll through a blend of tranquil lakeside landscapes, lush pine forests, and the rugged slopes of the Ouachita Mountains, all while connecting us to a wealth of outdoor spots and classic Arkansas small towns.

Starting our journey just a stone’s throw north of the Interstate 30 interchange in Caddo Valley, we turn onto Scenic Highway 7 and almost immediately find ourselves at the edge of DeGray Lake, a centerpiece of recreation in this part of the state. Crossing the DeGray Lake Dam is a highlight in itself—calm waters on one side, the Caddo River stretching out below on the other. If we’re in the mood to stretch our legs or spend a day in nature, DeGray Lake State Resort Park is right at hand, boasting hiking trails, a marina, a golf course, and cozy campsites tucked under the pines. We also pass several well-maintained Corps of Engineers recreation areas, offering boat ramps, picnic spots, and shaded swimming beaches—perfect for a lazy summer afternoon.

Once we leave the lake behind, the road takes on a pleasantly rural feel as we glide north into Bismarck. This small community is a handy pit stop if you need snacks, fuel, or just a moment to catch our breath. Bismarck sits at the crossroads of AR-7 and AR-84, and it has that quintessential Arkansas charm—modest homes, local diners, and friendly folks who’ll give you a wave as you drive through. Just north of town, the road begins its gentle dance with the Ouachita foothills, gradually climbing and curving through rolling woods and rugged terrain that hint at the grand mountain views to come.

The final stretch of this route treats us to a classic Ouachita drive—curves and hills shaded by tall hardwoods and southern pines. Before long, we find ourselves approaching the southern edge of Lake Hamilton, another gem for boating and lakeside cabins. Crossing Lake Hamilton’s bridges is a beautiful prelude to the bustle of Hot Springs itself. Once we roll into town on Central Avenue, Highway 7 transforms into a lively corridor lined with shops, restaurants, and the unmistakable retro vibe that makes Hot Springs so beloved. We pass Higdon Ferry Road—Arkansas Highway 88—and catch a glimpse of the Hot Springs Mall, a local shopping staple, before wrapping up our cruise at a fuel stop just a few blocks north.

Whether we’re after water adventures at DeGray Lake, a scenic picnic with mountain views, or a lively day in downtown Hot Springs, this stretch of Scenic Highway 7 packs plenty into a short, leisurely drive. It’s a slice of Arkansas that reminds us just how easily nature, small towns, and historic resorts blend together in the Natural State.
