Take a ride through the wooded suburbs of central Arkansas as we follow Arkansas Highway 100—known locally as Maumelle Boulevard—on a short but telling three-mile journey through the city of Maumelle. This northern stretch of AR-100 begins in a quiet, tree-lined landscape and gradually transitions into the city’s main commercial corridor, capturing the subtle rhythm of a well-planned community on the edge of the Little Rock metro.
We begin our drive at the junction of AR-100 and AR-365 just north of Maumelle, where the route sets out southward with little fanfare. Almost immediately, we rise above the Union Pacific Railroad on a broad concrete overpass, with open sky and low brush giving way to a denser canopy of pine and hardwood. The roadside quickly narrows under the weight of greenery, and for the first mile or so, it feels more like a parkway than a city street. Here, AR-100 winds gently through residential subdivisions tucked behind tree buffers, where carefully designed entrances signal Maumelle’s roots as a master-planned community.
As we continue south, the transition is gradual but unmistakable. The homes set farther back, and the landscape begins to open. Traffic signals appear more frequently, and Maumelle Boulevard begins to carry the look—and function—of a true arterial road. Small shopping centers, gas stations, and local eateries become more common, though they never overwhelm the boulevard. Unlike the sprawl of nearby corridors in North Little Rock or Conway, Maumelle’s commercial zone is compact, deliberate, and largely low-rise—designed to serve the community without dominating it.
We end our drive at the intersection with Odom Boulevard, where the city’s civic and retail core begins in earnest. Just beyond this point lie larger intersections and the southern continuation of AR-100 toward Interstate 430, but here at Odom, the balance between neighborhood and necessity is still intact. It’s a modest conclusion to a route that mirrors Maumelle’s character: intentional, green, and quietly growing.
