Take a quick but eventful ride through the Inland Empire as we follow Interstate 215 north through San Bernardino, California. This 8-mile connector between CA-210 and I-15 might be short, but it threads through a mix of suburban neighborhoods, foothill scenery, and vital transportation links in one of Southern California’s busiest corridors.
Our journey begins just south of the CA-210 interchange, where we merge onto I-215 heading northwest. The cityscape of San Bernardino stretches out before us, but almost immediately, we’re greeted by a surprising splash of green—Shandin Hills Golf Club, its manicured fairways flanked by low hills, offering a brief moment of serenity amid the bustle of the freeway. Just past this oasis, University Parkway marks the gateway to California State University, San Bernardino, tucked at the base of the San Bernardino Mountains. The surrounding area takes on a collegiate feel, with wide boulevards and student-driven activity lining the corridor.
As we continue, the road rises gently into the neighborhood of University Heights, where development begins to thin and the views open up. Passing Palm Avenue, suburban rooftops give way to more rugged, undeveloped terrain, hinting at the edge of the Inland Empire’s sprawl. To the west, the San Gabriel Mountains frame the horizon; to the north, the Mojave begins to stir. It’s here that we sense a shift—not just in landscape, but in purpose—as I-215 prepares to hand off its northbound travelers to its more prominent parent.
We reach our journey’s end at the major interchange with Interstate 15, where I-215’s northern terminus connects seamlessly with one of California’s most critical north-south arteries. As I-15 merges in and we swing northwest, the road broadens with anticipation—heading toward Hesperia, the Cajon Pass, and points far beyond. Though brief, this stretch of I-215 serves as a vital junction, stitching together communities, educational centers, and commercial corridors within greater San Bernardino County.
