Interstate 75: Cincinnati to Lexington – Kentucky

There’s nothing quite like the drive from Cincinnati to Lexington along Interstate 75, especially if you’re a fan of rolling hills, small towns, and that unique blend of urban and rural scenery you get in this part of the country. We start our journey in the heart of Cincinnati, crossing the iconic Brent Spence Bridge out of Ohio and into Kentucky. This bridge is not only a major river crossing over the Ohio River, but also a gateway between two states with very different vibes. Right after leaving Ohio, you’ll notice the scenery shift: those big city skylines give way to the more laid-back pace of northern Kentucky suburbs.

As we merge onto I-75 southbound, the route quickly threads through the city of Covington, with its historic downtown and riverfront parks just off the interstate. Not long after, we roll past the interchange with U.S. Highway 25, and I-75 takes a southwest turn through Fort Mitchell. This stretch is lined with classic roadside stops—if you have time, check out the Vent Haven Museum, the only museum in the world dedicated to ventriloquism, just a short hop off the interstate in Fort Mitchell. For families, the Florence Y’all Water Tower is a quirky regional icon right along the highway in Florence, and makes for a fun selfie stop if you’re breaking up the drive.

Continuing south, we pass the busy interchange with Interstate 275, which forms the Cincinnati beltway, and roll through Erlanger and the bustling commercial centers of Florence. Here, I-75 and I-71 run together briefly before splitting at Walton. Stay south on I-75 as the route begins to stretch its legs into Kentucky’s open countryside. The next fifty-odd miles are some of the most scenic on this run, winding through the gentle, rolling hills that Kentucky is famous for.

If you’re hungry for a detour, consider exploring the small towns just off the interstate. Georgetown, for example, is just a few minutes from I-75 and home to Kentucky Horse Park, a must-see for anyone curious about the Bluegrass State’s equestrian roots. Further north, you’ll pass near the Ark Encounter in Williamstown, a massive full-scale replica of Noah’s Ark that draws visitors from all over the country. The highway itself passes close to charming Main Streets, horse farms, and scenic overlooks, so keep an eye out for brown tourism signs—there’s more off the exit ramps than you might expect.

As you get closer to Lexington, the scenery becomes even more classically Kentucky: thoroughbred farms with white fences, old stone walls, and miles of lush bluegrass pastureland. Lexington, known as the Horse Capital of the World, greets you with a blend of historic charm and modern energy. The route ends at the interchange with Interstate 64, which runs east-west across the state and is another gateway to Kentucky adventure—whether you’re heading for the Bourbon Trail, the Daniel Boone National Forest, or just exploring the city’s revitalized downtown.

This drive on Interstate 75 is more than just a link between two cities; it’s a snapshot of Kentucky life. Whether you’re passing through or making stops along the way, there’s plenty to discover right off the interstate. So next time you’re cruising this stretch of I-75, take a minute to appreciate the mix of history, roadside Americana, and natural beauty that makes this corridor something special.
